Springfield work with local schools to design hedgehog highway

2nd February 2023

One of Scotland’s leading home builders, Springfield Properties, has teamed up with pupils at Strathkinness Primary School to create a hedgehog highway at their new development in the village to mark National Hedgehog Day.

The ‘highway’ connects each garden within the 4 and 5 bedroom development just off High Road with a small access to allow hedgehogs to safely roam. Working with Fife Council, the Scottish Home Builders of the Year have agreed to install the openings to enable hedgehogs to roam in gardens which will reduce how far the spikey critters need to travel to forage for food and reducing road crossings for their safety.

All the pupils at the school have been tasked with designing the hedgehog windows that will form the ecological corridors and the winning design will be installed in the gardens at the Springfield development. Springfield Regional Sales Director, Liz Cleghorn, said:

“Strathkinness is a beautiful rural village and is home to ample wildlife. As with all of our developments, careful consideration has been given to the environment and local biodiversity. With hedgehogs in decline, following a suggestion from the Council, we were more than happy to feature a hedgehog highway within our development and we’re looking forward to seeing the designs the pupils come up with.”

Strathkinness Primary School teacher, Jill, said:

“We’re really excited to get the kids involved with the hedgehog highways at Springfield’s Strathkinness development. In the past, we’ve found a hedgehog near the school and contacted a local hedgehog sanctuary for him to be rehomed safely, since then the pupils at our school have been very interested in hedgehogs and are keen to help them where possible.”

The luxury 4 and 5 bedroom Springfield homes are on sale with prices starting at £315,000. Each of the homes include generous levels of insulation, high quality heating systems, PV with the added benefit of solar IBoost to maximise use of the energy produced,  cabling for electric car charging points, superior fixtures and fitting and a choice of paint colours throughout.
