Let us introduce our Board of Directors

Alexander W Adam, Part-time Executive Chairman

Sandy is the grandson of the founder of Springfield and has worked for the Company since the 1980s. Sandy led the Company during its change from a market garden business into a housebuilder in 1988. Sandy has been Chairman of the Company since 2004 and has been the driver behind many key commercial decisions including the focus on affordable housing, the geographic expansion out of Moray in 2010,the acquisition of Redrow’s Scottish assets/operations in 2011 and the listing of Springfield on AIM in 2017. Sandy has over 30 years of experience in the Scottish housing and property markets, including his role as Chairman of Homes for Scotland between 2014 and 2015.

Innes Smith CA, Chief Executive Officer

After graduating from Heriot Watt University in 1991, Innes qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG before moving into industry as financial controller at SGL Technic, a subsidiary of RK Carbon Fibres (now called SGL Carbon Fibres Limited), a NASDAQ and Deutsche Bourse listed company. Innes was promoted to finance director at SGL Technic and after five years moved to Gael Force. Innes joined Springfield in 2005 as Finance Director and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in October 2012 after seven years with the Company. In his role as Chief Executive Officer Innes has grown the scale of the Springfield family of companies with annual revenue increasing from £53.5 million in 2011/2012 to £140 million in 2017/18. Innes was appointed to the board of Homes for Scotland in 2016.

Michelle Motion, Chief Finance Officer

Michelle joined Springfield as a Finance Director in 2013. Michelle has over 20 years experience of the property and construction industry. She has worked for Morrison Developments Limited, a subsidiary of AWG plc, and a FTSE 250 company, and the house building company Avant Group, previously known as Gladedale Group. Michelle graduated with a BA in Accounting and an MBA and is a qualified accountant from the Charted Institute of Management Accountants.

Roger Eddie, Non-Executive Director

Chair of Remuneration and Nomination Committees, sits on Audit Committee

Roger worked for the Bank of Scotland for 32 years, most recently as Director of the North of Scotland Real Estate Team. Roger sits on the Board of the Port of Cromarty Firth and of their Cruise Highland subsidiary. Roger joined Springfield as a non-executive Director on 13 November 2008.

Matthew Benson, Non-Executive Director

Chair of Audit Committee, sits on Remuneration and Nomination Committees

Matthew graduated from Oxford University and began his career with Morgan Stanley, working in international finance in London. Matthew then established his own consultancy business focused on the structuring and planning of high quality residential and leisure projects. Matthew joined Rettie & Co as a director in 2002 with responsibility for land and development, new homes and rural projects. He was appointed to the Springfield Board as a non-executive Director in 2011. Matthew has a number of other responsibilities including Member of the Advisory Board of Kleinwort Hambros private bank, Trustee of Project Scotland and Director of Edinburgh Arts Festival. Matthew was also the founding chair of bio-tech businesses EctoPharma Limited and Ryboquin Limited.

Nick Cooper, Non-executive Director

Sits on Audit, Remuneration and Nomination Committees

Nick is a qualified solicitor with over 20 years’ board experience with UK-listed and private companies. From 2010 to 2015, he was Corporate Services Director at Cable & Wireless Communications plc, which he joined from Cable & Wireless plc, where from 2006 to 2010 he was General Counsel and Company Secretary. His previous in-house legal and corporate experience includes roles at Energis Communications Ltd, JD Wetherspoon plc, The Sage Group plc and Asda Group plc. Nick is currently a non-executive director of AIM-listed CPP Group plc and a number of private start-up companies. 

Colin RaeNon-executive Director

Sits on Audit, Remuneration and Nomination Committees

Colin is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with significant experience in the construction and housebuilding industries. From 2002 to 2019, he held leadership positions at Places for People one of the largest development, regeneration, property management and leisure companies in the UK. Most recently he was Group Executive Development Director responsible for a UK-wide mixed tenure development programme of c.£200 million. Previous experience includes project management roles at The EDI Group, and Woolwich Homes Ltd, as well as surveyor positions at Millar Brown Associates and Gibson & Simpson. Colin is a director of Homes for Scotland, he is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) and holds a BSc in Quantity Surveying from Napier University.

Thomas (Tom) Leggeat, Managing Director – Springfield Partnerships 

Tom graduated from Heriot Watt University in 2001 with a degree in Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying. He worked for three years on commercial and industrial projects before joining Springfield in 2004. He has built a team which, from small beginnings, has delivered many commercial builds and nearly 2000 affordable homes.

Ewan Macleod

Group Commercial Director

Ewan has worked in housing and property development in the public and private sectors for over 20 years. He has worked for Local Authorities, Registered Social Landlords and main contractors. Starting as project surveyor he has progressed to Commercial Director joining Springfield in 2015. 

Mark Hamilton, Group Architectural Director

Mark graduated from Strathclyde University School of Architecture in 1996 with a first class honours degree. Before joining Springfield in 2012 Mark was an Associate Director Architect with ZM Architecture from 2006. Simultaneously he led a studio design unit at the Strathclyde University School of Architecture for over 12 years whilst being a Design Tutor with Oxford Brookes University. As well as the overall coordination of the Design Department, Mark now specialises in major projects, urban design and master planning.

Andrew Todd, Group Director - General Counsel and Company Secretary

Andrew graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1999 with an LLB (Hons) and from the Glasgow Graduate School of Law with a Dip (Law) in 2000. Between 2000 and 2014 he worked for Scotland’s two largest law firms, McGrigors and Dundas & Wilson specializing in commercial and residential development. He joined Springfield in 2014 as its first in-house lawyer. He was appointed General Counsel in 2016 and Company Secretary in 2017.  Andrew has an MBA from Strathclyde Business School.

Heather Henderson, Group HR Director

Heather graduated in 2005 from Glasgow Caledonian University with a 1st class Honours degree in Business Information Management.  Having previously worked in two solicitors offices, she joined Springfield in 2006 as PA to the Directors.  Her interest in human resources and passion for dealing with people, saw her take on the challenge to form the Springfield HR function.  She was appointed HR Manager in 2008.  She continued her studies, gaining her post graduate certificate in Personnel and Development in 2009 and post graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management in 2011 from Robert Gordon University.  She became a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in 2013 and Group HR Director in 2017.

Peter Matthews, Managing Director – Central

Peter graduated from the University of Oxford in 1992 with an MA in Engineering Science.  Peter then worked for a variety of different companies, including Mobil, Goldman Sachs, OC&C Strategy Consultants, Reuters and RAC, in strategic and business development roles before joining Taylor Wimpey in 2006.  At Taylor Wimpey he was Corporate Development Director, reporting into the Group Chief Executive, where he was responsible for a number of strategic projects including the integration of George Wimpey and Taylor Woodrow in 2007, and the sale of Taylor Woodrow Construction to VINCI SA in 2008.  In 2009 he was appointed as the MD of Taylor Wimpey Logistics, and then in 2012 as the MD of Taylor Wimpey East Scotland based in Dunfermline. Peter also has an MBA from INSEAD and joined Springfield as Managing Director – Central in 2018. 

Karen Campbell, Group Corporate Communications Director

Karen is a Social Policy graduate from Edinburgh University and attained her masters in Housing at Heriot Watt University. Karen joined Springfield as Group Director for Corporate Communications in 2020 from the Scottish Futures Trust, where she lead the housing programmes as a Senior Associate Director.  Previously Karen was Director of Policy & Operations at Homes for Scotland, responsible for addressing challenges across the house building industry.  Karen also worked within West Lothian Council’s housing service and has undertaken a secondment to the Scottish Government where she helped deliver the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative. Karen joined Springfield in 2020. 

Ken Millar, Group SHEQ Director

Ken has over 20 years’ experience with housebuilding and construction and more recently has worked for CALA Group and Robertson Group as Group SHEQ Director. Ken gained his NEBOSH and Safety Management Diploma in the Mid 90’s and his Environmental Diploma in 2000. In addition to employment as in-house Health & Safety Director Ken has also worked in consultancy providing a service to a number of Blue Chip clients. Ken joined Springfield in 2020. 

Dave Main, Managing Director – North

Dave graduated from the Robert Gordons University in Aberdeen in 1995 with a BSc in Quantity Surveying. He worked in the Oil and Gas industry between 1995 and 1999. He joined Springfield in 1999 as its first Quantity Surveyor. He was appointed Managing Director for the North Private Housing business in June 2018.

Martin Egan, Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director – Dawn Homes

Martin has 30 years professional experience working in the housebuilding sector in Scotland. He graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BSc (Distinction) in Quantity Surveying and started his career off at Tay Homes Plc, where he held Quantity Surveying and then Commercial/Technical Management roles, prior to joining Dawn Homes in 1997 as Technical Director. In 2002-2004 he undertook an MSc in Construction Innovation at Strathclyde Business School and graduated with Distinction. In 2008, Martin was promoted to Managing Director of Dawn Homes, a position which he still holds. In addition to his role within Dawn Homes, in May 2020 Martin was promoted to Chief Operating Officer for Springfield Group and is responsible for the delivery of both annual private sales and all future large scale village projects throughout the Central belt, incorporating Springfield, Walker and Dawn brands.

Alasdair Mackie, Group Engineering Director

Alasdair graduated from Heriot Watt University in 1996 with BEng Hons in Civil Engineering. He has predominantly worked in the housebuilding industry and has worked for Wimpey Homes, Stewart Milne Homes and Redrow Homes during his career. Alasdair has also worked in the civils construction industry with the Wimpey Group and then Tarmac Construction. Alasdair has been employed by Springfield since the Redrow Homes Scotland acquisition in 2011. He was promoted to Group Engineering Director in 2019.
